Time Vs. Miles

Time vs Miles: When Should You Service Your Car?

If you drive a car, then you hopefully know that you need to get regular maintenance and repairs. When getting regular maintenance and repairs for your vehicle, it's important to keep track of when you last received those repairs and when you should get them again. This information can likely be found in your car's owner's manual. There are two ways that manufacturers and mechanics generally outline when drivers should receive their routine maintenance and repairs - time and miles. What's the difference? And which is more important? Read below to find out.

Time

When you are trying to keep up with your car's regular maintenance, you may be tempted to go solely based on the time between procedures. For example, most manufacturers and technicians agree that modern cars should get an oil change every five to seven months.

Miles

Miles-based maintenance is similar, but instead of going by time, you'll determine when to get your maintenance by mileage. With oil changes, for example, most manufacturers suggest an oil change every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. These numbers aren't random - be sure to take care of your maintenance in the suggested mileage interval to get the best performance, efficiency, and longevity out of your car.

When to Service Your Car

So, when should you service your car? Should you go by time or miles? The answer depends on your driving habits. In simple terms, you should get your car serviced based on whichever comes first.

If you tend to go on frequent road trips and therefore rack up mileage on your car's odometer frequently, then be sure to take your car into our service center when the maintenance procedure hits the suggested mileage. However, if you don't drive your car often, you should go by time instead.
